SOMERVILLE HOUSE ADAPTIVE RE-USE

Vancouver, BC, Canada

The Vancouver School of Theology (VST), a cornerstone of theological education in British Columbia for over a century, is undertaking a significant transformation through the adaptive reuse of Somerville House at the University of British Columbia. Rooted in a legacy shaped by Anglican, United Church, and Presbyterian traditions—and strengthened by longstanding partnerships with First Nations and inter-religious communities—VST continues to evolve its mission of thoughtful, engaged theological education.

The conversion of Somerville House reflects this ongoing evolution. With VST relocating from the iconic Iona Building, the project reimagines a former residence into an institutional home that more visibly expresses the School’s identity and outreach. The redesign considers both form and purpose: a cruciform expression anchors the architectural language, composed of a pronounced horizontal roof plane intersecting a vertical, light-filled frame. A fourth-floor clerestory introduces transparency and illumination, while vertical buttressing elements clarify the massing along the east and west façades. Removing residential elements—balconies, stair structures, fences, and dense landscaping—opens the building to St. Andrew’s Walk and the Iona courtyard, creating an inviting presence consistent with VST’s principles of service, openness, and community engagement.

The project emphasizes sustainability through pragmatic, long-life strategies rather than formal certification. Key considerations include adaptive reuse, durable and non-off-gassing materials, envelope performance aligned with BC Building Code energy provisions, natural ventilation where viable, and efficient building systems designed for long-term operational stewardship.

Safety and community integration are further supported through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles. Clear sightlines, transparent entry sequences, removal of screening vegetation, and comprehensive lighting reinforce a safe, welcoming environment. Ground-floor gathering and learning spaces connect directly to outdoor patios, enhancing visibility, activity, and connection to neighbouring institutions such as St. Andrew’s Hall.

Through this thoughtful conversion, Somerville House becomes a renewed centre for theological scholarship—one that embodies VST’s ecumenical heritage, commitment to outreach, and dedication to creating spaces that support dialogue, reflection, and learning.
