Shawnigan Lake School Centenary Project
MULTI-PURPOSE EDUCATIONAL RENOVATION & ADDITION
Shawnigan Lake, BC
The SLS Centenary project renewed the heart of a century-old campus building, originally rebuilt in the 1920s after a devastating fire. Instead of replacing the aging and code-deficient structure, Christine Lintott Architects (CLA) led a transformation that preserved its legacy while reimagining it for the future.
Community collaboration was central. CLA worked with school leadership, faculty, and students to understand evolving educational needs, especially the school’s emphasis on individualized learning. The result is a variety of spaces that support different learning styles—flexible classrooms, quiet nooks, breakout areas, and specialized environments for neurodiverse learners. The new timber-frame library expands this vision, blending traditional character with contemporary spaces for collaboration, project-based learning, and cultural life.
The integrated design process enabled the building to remain in use throughout construction. CLA managed a two-phase refurbishment that gutted, reinforced, and upgraded the structure while students continued their studies, requiring meticulous coordination with engineers and contractors. Attics and overlooked areas were creatively adapted into new classrooms, increasing usable space and program value.
Sustainability guided every decision. Retaining and upgrading the existing structure reduced the project’s carbon footprint compared to new construction. Performance was further improved with high-efficiency windows, enhanced insulation, and a hybrid heating system that combined restored radiators with radiant technology. The timber-frame library addition, fabricated off-site and erected with precision, demonstrates durability, natural material beauty, and the timeless efficiency of prefabricated methods.
Today, SLS Centenary unites tradition and innovation. It preserves the character and pride of the historic building while creating contemporary, high-performance spaces that will inspire students for generations to come.
