Critical Affordable Housing Plan for Mayne Island Housing
Mayne Island is facing a critical housing shortage. With no dedicated rental accommodations or seniors’ facilities, and a declining stock of affordable options, the island’s growing population has few choices for long-term housing. The Salish Grove project aims to change that.
Situated on a serene three-acre site along Village Bay Road, Salish Grove will provide up to ten purpose-built affordable rental homes in a setting that celebrates the island’s natural beauty. Led by the Mayne Island Housing Society (MIHS), the initiative has been four years in the making—facilitating the rezoning, subdivision, and eventual title transfer of land generously donated by Dr. Sean McHugh.
The design emphasizes ecological sensitivity and community connection. The proposed one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes will meet low energy targets, with features such as water retention ponds, habitat protection, EV charging, and a community gathering space.
CLA is proud to support the MIHS team in advancing site planning and design strategies that balance affordability with environmental care. Together, we’re helping to shape Salish Grove into a sustainable, inclusive housing model for the Gulf Islands.
