Victoria Native Friendship Centre Primary Care Clinic
TENANT IMPROVEMENT / MEDICAL OFFICES
Saanich, BC
The Tillicum Primary Clinic represents the Victoria Native Friendship Centre’s commitment to expanding accessible, culturally appropriate healthcare for the urban Indigenous community in Greater Victoria. Building on our long-standing relationship with VNFC, this renovation transformed a leased commercial unit into a welcoming space that integrates traditional wellness practices with Western medicine. Through close collaboration with the client, the design emphasizes a de-institutionalized environment, incorporating Indigenous artwork, warm accent finishes, and family-friendly layouts that foster a sense of comfort and belonging.
Collaboration was central to the project’s success. CLA worked closely with VNFC, Kinetic Construction, and a trusted consultant team with experience in medical spaces. Our integrated approach ensured that the renovation was delivered efficiently, on schedule, and under budget. By drawing on established partnerships, we provided a smooth design and construction process that aligned the project team around shared goals, while keeping community needs at the forefront.
Environmental sensitivity informed key design decisions. Maximizing access to natural light and fresh air was a priority, so waiting areas, entries, and medical offices were carefully positioned along windows. These choices enhance patient well-being, reduce reliance on artificial lighting, and support VNFC’s focus on holistic health. The clinic now provides a brighter, more uplifting environment that reflects its purpose as a place of healing rather than illness.
The renovated facility accommodates all age groups and promotes a family-oriented model of care. Flexible waiting areas, open circulation, and child-friendly spaces create an atmosphere that supports community gathering as much as individual treatment. While modest in scale, the project demonstrates how thoughtful renovations can deliver high-impact outcomes—meeting program requirements, respecting budget constraints, and advancing cultural and environmental values.
The VNFC Tillicum Primary Clinic is a testament to collaboration, respect for community identity, and the ability of design to quietly but meaningfully support health and wellness.
