Implementing Biomimicry (B-Hive)

Implementing Biomimicry - Opportunities & Constraints

BHive is a collaborative venture deploying the practice of biomimicry to solve design challenges. This hub of innovation has been together for more than six years and combines the talents and skills of biomimicry professionals Sue Okerstrom, Leon Wang, and Christine Lintott. Their efforts have developed prototypes of products for non-invasive tree attachments and sound-dampening acoustic panels. Their work has systematically applied research methodologies that look to nature as model, mentor, and measure, informing creative and unique solutions inspired by nature’s wisdom. To date, their self-funded work has leveraged strategic partnerships with industry, academia, and government, yet struggled to commercialize.

Stepping back from persistent challenges and road-blocks, the collaborators have mapped their experiences and lessons learned in a process infographic authored by fellow biomimic, artist and researcher Kira Hunt. This year-long effort is now articulated and Part 1 is ready for sharing, in three pages it covers:  an introduction to biomimicry, related definitions, three process to approach biomimicry, team roles, and a legend and summary for Part 2.  The fourth page of the document is a teaser to Part 2, a longer process diagram that provides a detailed framework for each step of the biomimicry process.

The hope is that this analysis of process will inspire other practitioners in a range of disciplines to pursue nature informed design, and to engage with the profound challenges in doing so. BHive is launching this effort to invite our network to engage in conversations and provide feedback on the process with the intent to continue to refine and advance the successful realization of designs that are deeply informed by nature’s solutions.
