"The Ferns" Daycare
59-CHILD DAYCARE FACILITY
Victoria, BC, Canada
Ferns Daycare is a purpose-built childcare facility at the heart of Pacifica Burnside Housing in Victoria, BC, designed by Christine Lintott Architects. Co-developed with BC Housing and operated by the Gorge Community Centre, it brings daily rhythm, play, and intergenerational energy to the shared courtyard.
The design centres on openness and activation. Though fenced for licensing, the outdoor play area maintains clear visual and spatial connection to the larger site. Seasonal shade sails and durable furnishings support safe, year-round use.
Interior spaces are bright, welcoming, and highly functional. Thoughtful details—like the playful use of colour in standard ceiling grids—animate the space, while ample natural daylight enhances well-being. The design prioritizes durability, practicality, and joy.
Fully electric and aligned with BC Step Code energy standards, the daycare shares infrastructure with the larger development. The project reflects CLA’s commitment to creating grounded, imaginative spaces that support everyday life and build meaningful community connection.
